Roach Types

Cockroaches have been alive for millions and millions of years. There is quite an extensive list of different species of cockroaches. There are thousands of species. The most common species include the Oriental cockroaches, German Cockroaches, American cockroaches, and brown banded cockroaches. These species are described below in detail.

The oriental cockroach have either black or dark brown bodies. They are usually glossy. Under normal conditions, their life span is up to around six months. Female oriental cockroaches can grow up to about 1 ¼ inches long, and the males can grow up to just under 1 inch long. Oriental cockroaches are unable to fly. This type of cockroach will typically feed on decaying organic matter such as decaying plants, animals, and animal waste products.

The German cockroach is likely the most common species and they are especially common in homes. They will typically be anywhere from ½ an inch to just under ¾ of an inch. They will be a light brown in color with dark brown stripes behind the head. They have a life span of up to 12 months, but due to how fast the reproduction cycle is, you would need to kill about 90-95% of the population in the house or apartment to really be effective. This type of roach also cannot fly, and they emit strong odor when in danger.

The American cockroach will be the largest type of cockroach that is also commonly found in homes. They will grow up to 2 inches in length. They are normally a brown/reddish brown in color with yellowish bands around the head. This type of cockroach can fly, but only for a short distance. These roaches will eat just about anything from cheese to glue to dead human skin. They can live for about 2 years, however they have a slower development then other roaches so a large infestation is possible, but unlikely.

The brown banded cockroach is the smallest of this group, only growing up to ½ an inch. The females are reddish brown/brown color and the males have a dark brown base and get lighter at the tips of the wings. Males and females have yellowish colored bands across their bodies. For this species, only the males can fly, but both males females will jump if frightened. This species will live up to about 11 months.

Now that we have an idea of what we are dealing with, it is important to understand that just because you have cockroaches and cockroach eggs, it doesn’t mean you don’t keep your home or apartment clean. If you live in an apartment, you will have whatever infestation your neighbors have. Even if you are very clean, the roaches will still find a way in. I personally clean everything as much as I can, I don’t keep food out, take the garbage out, etc and roaches still found their way in. If you are in a house, you could have taken it home from grocery bags, someone coming over, decaying animals outside, etc.

I have tried a few different things with varying success and in the following pages I will cover them and explain my findings.
